Teki-juku was a private school for Dutch medicine which was established just before the reopening of Japan to the world in the 19th century. Among the students of the school were many of the leaders who contributed to the modernization of Japan, such as Yukichi Fukuzawa, whose image is now on the ten-thousand yen note. Surrounded by offices, the Teki-juku site is near Nakanoshima Park where there are many classic Western-style buildings including the Nakanoshima Public Hall. The nearest station is Yodoyabashi Station on the subway or Keihan Railway line. Osaka Castle and the Imperial Hotel can be accessed from the Nakanoshima area by water-bus (Aqualiner).
