(10) Kiyomizu Temple, Higashiyama, Kyoto

Kiyomizu Temple was originally founded to revere the waterfalls of Otowayama, one of the city’s southeast mountains. The famous “Kiyomizu-no-butai,” a veranda built out over a cliff in front of the main hall, affords a panoramic view of the city of Kyoto. The Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka slopes from the temple are flanked by a variety of souvenir shops selling Kyoto’s traditional industrial products such as Kiyomizu ceramics and Kyoto dolls. As you leave the slopes and walk northward, you will find Kodaiji Temple and the big statue of the Reizan Kannon Goddess of Mercy. If you keep going you will eventually come to the Yasaka Shrine nicknamed Gion-san. To get to Kiyomizu Temple, walk from Kiyomizumichi on the city bus route or Gojo Station on the Keihan Railway line.
