Zen Buddhism in Japan has its origins in Rinzai Zen taught by Myoan Eisai at the beginning of the Kamakura Period (1185-1333).
There is a Zen saying that “A person needs a half tatami while awake and a full tatami while asleep.”
The saying means that even a person living in a big house takes up very little space.
It encapsulates the Zen philosophy which encourages us to minimize waste and avoid conspicuous, greedy consumption.
