Gardens (karesansui)
Karesansui (dry landscape) is one style of Japanese garden in which an overall landscape of mountains and water is expressed symbolically. 
Instead of actually digging a pond and letting water flow through the garden, natural rises and falls of the land are used to represent waterfalls and streams, or water is symbolized by gravel around groups of stones.
Famous examples of such gardens are to be found in Kyoto at the Ryoanji Temple and the Daisenin Temple, a subsidiary of the Daitokuji Temple.
