It takes only a 10-minute ride by JR from Kyoto to Otsu City. Please come and see Otsu when you visit Kyoto. Sakamoto area, Biwa Lake, and Ishiyamadera Temple are good attractions that can be seen in a day.
Ogoto Hot Spring is a good place to stay over suburban Kyoto. You can visit here by cable car and ropeway, crossing over Mt. Hiei.







 

Saikyo-ji Temple
Said to have been built by Shotokutaishi, Saikyo-ji Temple is the headquarters of the Tendai Shinsei Sect of Buddhism whose vast temple complex expands over the northeastern foot of Mt. Hiei. It is famous as the burial place of the family of Mitsuhide Akechi.

Kyuchikurin-in Abbey
This is one of the abbeys/retreats serving Enryaku-ji Temple. The large garden beautifully incorporates Mt. Hachioji in the background.

Hiyoshi-taisha Shrine
This is the headquarters of more than 3,800 shrines of Sanno Shintoism. The three beautiful bridges that cross the Omiya River to the vast complex of some 130,000 tsubo are said to have been donated by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. In autumn, the grounds are under a canopy of tinted foliage from some 3,000 trees.

Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple
Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple is the headquarters of the Tendai Sect of Buddhism and situated amongst a temple complex on top of Mt. Hiei, which is one of Japan’s big three sacred mountains, the other two being Mt. Koya and Mt. Osore. The site was developed by the monk Saicho in 788. The name of Enryakuji and the task of protecting the Heian Court against demons were assigned in 823 by the emperor. For 1,200 years since, it has kept the eternal light lit.
