Arashiyama is a place of scenic beauty with tinted foliage in autumn and cherry blossoms in spring. Since log ago, people have been visiting the area to enjoy the landscape along the Oi River. Much that is remindful of ancient times remains including streets like the Atago-kaido Way, and temples and shrines such as Tenryu-ji Temple that Takauji Ashikaga built for the Emperor Godaigo, Nonomiya-jinja Shrine that appears in the “Sakaki” chapter of The Tale of Genji, and Daikaku-ji Temple that served the detached palace of the Emperor Saga.




Point 
When you move from Nara, you can take the JR or Kintetsu line. The Kintetsu limited express train is comfortable for you in considering time and amenity of sightseeing. The train runs from Kyoto to Nara or Kashiharajingu station every 15minutes. In recent years, the connection of JR lines between Kyoto and Nara is improving, and the JR has become usable.  From Osaka to Kyoto, the Hankyu limited express from Umeda to Kawaramachi station, Keihan line limited express from Yodoyabashi, Kitahama, Kyobashi, Temmabashi to Shichijo, Shijo, Gojo, Demachiyanagi station

Tenryu-ji Temple(World Heritage)
Tenryu-ji Temple was built by Takauji Ashikaga, promoter of the 14th century Muromachi feudal government, to honor the Emperor Godaigo after his passing. The garden was designed by the renowned imperial landscaper Muso Kokushi to incorporate Mt. Arashi and Mt. Kame in the background of a pond and path circling around it.

Nonomiya-jinja Shrine
This famous shrine appears in the “Sakaki” chapter of The Tale of Genji. In the Heian Period (9th - 12 century), a princess by the name of Itsuki no Miko received her ablutions here before setting out for Ise to serve Ise-jingu Shrine in the place of the emperor.

Daikaku-ji Temple
Daikaku-ji Temple is known as the birthplace of the Saga Goryu School of flower arrangement. East of the temple is Osawa Pond that beautifully reflects the harvest moon.

Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple
Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple was built to honor those who die without any relatives or connections, by Kobodaishi, the founder of the Mt. Koya Buddhist sanctuary. It was later converted to a Buddhist training hall by Honen Shonin.
On the grounds are found numerous stone pagodas and Buddha statues, large and small. Every year, in the evenings of August 23 and 24, the Sento Kuyo ritual is performed, whereby the more than 8,000 stone Buddhas are lit up creating a subtle and profound mood of countless numbers of candles flickering in the dark. It is popular event amongst pilgrims to the temple.
